Ex-Muslims International has launched the #FreeBetty campaign ahead of Apostasy Day (August 22) to demand freedom for Ibtissame “Betty” Lachgar, a Moroccan feminist and activist jailed for “blasphemy” after posting a photo in a shirt reading “Allah is lesbian.” She faces trial on August 27 and up to five years in prison, despite urgent health needs as a cancer survivor.
Betty’s case highlights the global fight against apostophobia and oppressive blasphemy laws. Click the button to the right to see how you can take action for Betty and for freedom.
Our hearts break for all our brothers and sisters still living under the fear of the death penalty for apostasy. We escaped tyranny and we believe it's our responsibility to help those of us still living in fear.
“The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.” -Albert Einstein
We must be agents of change, not just for apostasy laws but all cult behaviors, no matter who is doing it, because they all suppress truth, criticism, and progress. And its not just those countries with apostasy laws that are the problem. Other countries are complicit in supporting the status quo in the affected countries. Our vision is of a world that recognizes love as the goal and rationality as the method to achieve it.
Got an idea for a new project that would work toward our vision? Please let us know.
We're organizing our efforts at the Uniting The Cults subreddit. All who share our vision are welcome.
